Movie Review -Jobs
So I just watched the new movie about Steve Jobs called Jobs and to be honest, I was very disappointed with both the story and the way they presented it.
First of all, the acting for the most part was good with Ashton Kutcher giving a decent portrayal of Steve Jobs. The actors playing the others characters were also pretty good with the exception of the guy playing Woz. I just found the character very phony with him basically living and breathing for Jobs.
The story itself starts off with Jobs introducing the Ipod and then flashes back to his early days at Atari and the founding of Apple in his father's garage. It then goes a little into the problems Jobs had with the board that eventually lead to his ouster and finally his return to Apple. It tries really hard to squeeze 30 years into 2 hours but ultimately it fails.
My main problem with the movie is the portrayal of Steve Jobs as an almost perfect person and a victim of bad people out to get him. That is just pure BS. Jobs was a genius, but he was also a very vain egocentric man who bullied people to get his way. He was a ferocious taskmaster who cared little for people unless they could offer him something and when he was done with them thought nothing to throw them to the trash. When he had it done to him is when he finally realized he needed to change and to his credit he did. The Steve Jobs who returned to Apple was a different man.
Also another thing that irked me was the portrayal of the people at Apple developing everything themselves which again is not true. Many of the devices like the mouse and the graphical interface were not designed by Apple but rather came from a think tank research division of Xerox which basically gave the tech to Apple. The movie glosses over that and gives the impression that Apple came up with it on their own. They also portrayed Jobs as being the sole driving force of Apple. According to the movie, it was Jobs that pushed Woz to go to the Homebrew Computer Club and history shows it was the other way around. They also down played Mike Markkula's legacy at Apple. He was the guy that bankrolled Apple initially and without him there would be no Apple.
I guess the best way to sum it up is that it's a movie that tries hard to make Jobs look like this genius that nobody got. I would imagine his death influenced that a great deal. He was a brilliant man and tremendous marketer but he was also a man with demons and this hero worshipping attempt is factually wrong.
It's not a terrible movie, It's just a bad representation of the man with many misleading facts and some outright omissions. If you want a better representation of how things happened, you should watch Pirates Of Silicon Valley which according to most people around Jobs' circle is much more factual and it also does a good job of showing the Apple story as well as the Microsoft story.

Thanks for the review; I don't intend to watch it though, but it's nice to read about it anyway.

I'm looking forward to the one that has Woz as one of the executive producers. Should be out sometime in 2014. From what I've heard it has input from all the people there at the beginning like Mike Marcula and Robert X. Cringely and should be more fact based.Wyz wrote:Thanks for the review; I don't intend to watch it though, but it's nice to read about it anyway.
