Where Do I Find The Subnet Mask?

Post by Wyz on Sat Nov 23, 2013 4:22 pm

I don't quite know where to put this question, so I'm sticking it here. Very Happy

I'm trying to configure my sis's new Braille Reader for wireless delivery of NFB Newsline Service, and one of the requirements is to set up

IP Address Configuration :
Subnet Mask :
Default Gateway:
DNS Server 1

Plus
Use a Proxy Server  and have their URL
Port

I have no clue on some of these things; right now I'm researching it.  I watched the IT Kid that came out one year to configure the Msntv2 ( and Vista) to the Router in 2006 , but that was ages ago.

Back to researching How To ?

You're IP number is going to be the number the router issues to the device, not the true gateway IP but rather a local address supplied by the router and called a dynamic ip.  It's usually 192.168.1.whatever (usually 1 for pc and so on)

The subnet mask is usually going to be 255.255.255.0

The default gateway address is going to be the IP address supplied by your ISP.  You can find that by going to the Find My IP link.

The DNS server is also assigned by your ISP and you can find that by running the IP Config command.

Click on Start button > In the search bar Type command cmd > Press [enter] key

At DOS prompt type the command:

C:\>ipconfig /all

You should see DNS server IP address, and other information related to Windows networking.

As far as proxy server, I wouldn't think you would need to proxy it. You can, more than likely, skip that part unless the Braille device is making you put it behind a proxy which doesn't make much sense but it might be a requirement for that device.

You might see if the manufacturer of the device has a website to help you with the configuration.  I'm not familiar with the Braille device and it might require some additional steps that I'm not aware of.

I hope this helps you.  Let me know if you have further questions and let me know when you get everything sorted.  Once you get all the information together, it's really not that hard to set up.

Thanks, Mojo

You confirmed what I ultimately found by clicking on the double monitor icons on my task manager - the local access configuration including the DNS servers.

I didn't find the Proxy Servers, but thanks to you I now know where to look, and if all else fails I can call them on Tuesday for the info.

Ok, we're all set up now, Thanks; we have to wait for the NFB News-Online  peeps to give us the Proxy Server info and whatever all else from their end.  They said we'll be approved in 1-2 weeks.

Fingers crossed.

We got Ka'at , my lil sis, all set up with the added help from NFB ( National Federation for Blind) who called us personally to walk me through with further help; she can now select ( or rather I do it since she isn't used to a PC) the magazines/newspapers favorites , and I download them to my PC.  NFB Newsline- Online has a Manager App that sits on my Desktop and all I have to do is take her SDHC card from her device and put it in my card reader . . it downloads the updates to the the card and we put it back into her device .

Somewhere  it can be done wirelessly ; we're happy right now that she has something else to listen to other than my reading to her, and /or the radio.

New York Times, Washington Post, Vogue, WSJ, etc are available plus 300 + choices for free.  The catch , youse have to be legally board certified blind and/or dyslexic.

She's happy now. . and I'm at PEACE!  4 months it took. . .four months to get her connected.

We thank you again, Mojo, for your help and  kind patience !

  cheers
