Well I covered paid anti-virus in another post, so it's only fair to cover free solutions with this post.

Personally I use a free anti-virus at this time combined with a software firewall and anti-malware product to give me a 123 solution that, so far has worked really well for me.  Here are some of the products I recommend:

Microsoft Security Essentials ([You must be registered and logged in to see this link.])
This is by far the best free antivirus out their in my honest opinion.  Very high detection rates and frequent updates offset the bland interface and sometimes slow update service.  I also like that they don't sell an "enhanced" version and thus refrain from product pimping paid upgrades.  My biggest complaint is their real time virus blocking is a bit lacking but for free it works and works well.

Other free anti-virus solutions include

1)  AVG FREE ([You must be registered and logged in to see this link.])

Once the best free anti-virus, AVG has become somewhat lacking in the last few years.  They still do an excellent job for virus detection but the program is slow and clunky.  To top that off, their real-time virus blocking schemes often result in false positives too many times

2)  Avast  ([You must be registered and logged in to see this link.])

Another nice anti-virus system that while adequate tends to bog down your system.  Also their virus detection falls a bit behind Security Essentials and AVG.

There are a ton more free anti-virus programs out there so choose wisely and study reviews from multiple reputed sources before plunging in.

Got an anti-virus program I didn't mention?  Tell us what you use and why they do a better job than the afore mentioned products.

I have AVG on my Vista, and MSE on my Win7 , both of them have MalwareBytes. What do you think of Spybot -
Search & Destroy? Yea or Nay?

TIA

I've always liked Spybot but IMHO it has fallen a bit more due to MB stepping up their game.  But you can never have enough malware detectors and unlike Antivirus you can run more than one, so I don't see anything wrong with using both.

I use the paid version of Malware Bytes so I get enhanced real time malware protection which is a great 1-2 punch with Security Essentials.

I use MSE and malwarebytes. I gave up on Spybot years ago because malwarebytes always found things spybot didn't, then after going months with spybot not finding anything I decided I was wasting my time doing a scan that wasn't needed.

MSE is new to me, only been using it a few months. I used Avast for years but they burn me twice with false positives. The first time it was obvious false positives, all html webpages were listed as viruses, it didn't cause problems but caused me my time Sad

The 2nd time there were 3 files listed as viruses so I quarantine them so I could google what they were only one of the 3 files was needed to operate my pc. My pc immediately shut down and I had to reboot in safe mode and do a system restore that luckily worked. Even after that happening I kept Avast till a pc repair guy told me that MSE was considered better then Avast, obviously MSE won't have false positives on needed operating files, anyway he said MSE with malwarebytes were enough to keep the system clean.

I agree 100% Security Essentials + Malwarebytes + 2Way Firewall + Common Sense = Internet Harmony cheers

Yup I got your invite BUT I'm not too sure if I can handle all of the motion in this forum ! The trooper motion is ok but then the blinking xmas lights and snow falling along with a white bar that keeps on popping up at the bottom of the page--it pops up after so many snowflakes fall on it, almost looks like a reloading bar but it doesn't stay up long enough to see what it is--anyway it's too much motion for these old eyes Sad

LOL I never noticed the problem with the snow before you mentioned it but yeah it is annoying.  I turned it off for now until I can take a look and see if there is a way to fix that.

As far as the rest goes,  I did it just to give the forum a Christmassy look for the season with out having to do a whole skinning of the board.  If it's a needless distraction, I can go back to the old look.  It doesn't matter to me, so I'll let you guys make the decision.

I didn't really notice the snow, at first I thought it was Wookie Dander , until you Mojo said otherwise. Embarassed Laughing

Thanks Mojo, that blinking white bar at the bottom of this forum was really getting annoying and yes it still looks festive without the snow.
